Philips PowerTouch Plus PT870 Review
Welcome to our Philips PowerTouch Plus PT870 Review. The Philips PT870 is a rotary electric shaver with three heads and comes in the familiar Philips shaver style. As part of the PowerTouch range of shavers Philips claims the PowerTouch PT870 is one of the fastest ways of getting through your morning routine available.
The first thing you notice about the PT870 is the sheer size of the box the shaver comes in. This is because the shaver includes an integrated stand for cleaning the razor and also a bottle of Philips Jet Clean cleaning fluid. Whilst we haven't tried this integrated cleaner yet we're not entirely sure of the results as the shaver head can be opened and washed under a tap with normal water to clean it.
The fluid itself isn't too expensive and costs around £6 for a bottle. Philips recommends cleaning the PT870 this way on a regular basis with the assumption that it not only cleans the shaver heads but also lubricates them and charges at the razor at the same time.
With all the packaging actually getting at the shaver to see what it looks like takes a little while. The shaver comes with a charging cable, jet clean fluid bottle, and integrated Jet Clean stand but strangely doesn't have a two pin socket so if you don't have one available you'll have to go out and get one sharpish. This seems like a strange ommission as the cost of one of the plugs seems insignificant when compared to the cost of the Philips shaver.
Once unpacked the next step is to give the razor a decent initial charge and then get down to the actual process of shaving.
Looks and Handling
Now I've personally owned a number of different Philips electric shavers over the years and this one is one of the more expensive but to me the build quality seems to be worse. I'm not a massive fan of the rubber casing on the PT870 razor and the on/off switch seems a little flimsy. At the end of the day however these are minor concerns and what we're really interested in is the quality of the shaver and what the razor is like in operation.
Pressing the on button instantly activates the shaver and I couldn't help but notice it makes a lot more noise than my previous Philips electric shavers. The shaver feels smooth on the skin and effortlessly glides across my face easily handling a days worth of stubble. The integrated clipper quickly pops out to tidy up my sideburns and the jobs done in under three minutes. Not bad when all things are considered. My skin feels smooth afterwards, certainly smoother than with my normal Philips electric shaver although that could just be down to it being a little long in the tooth with the blades becoming duller.
The PT870 had tilting heads that easily adapt to different face shapes and unlike previous Philips shavers I've owned the entire shaver head also seems to be slightly flexible making the whole process a little easier.
I've now been using the Philips PowerTouch PT870 for over a week and it's still happily chugging away without the need for a recharge yet. I'll probably have a look at the heads soon and try out the cleaning system so may have something more to write after that.
